IMTS 2018 Preview

As has been the rising trend, additive metals continue to be a growing market and hot topic in the 3D printing industry. 3D printed metal parts can be engineered with complex features faster and oftentimes produced more cost-effectively than traditional manufacturing. Some of the biggest players in aerospace, medicine and energy are utilizing this cutting-edge technology for innovative designs and advanced production components to help propel their applications forward. Increased use has brought about further conversation around reliability of additive metal systems and materials, especially the reuse and recycling of metal powders.

This year at the IMTS 2018 Conference, Stratasys Direct Manufacturing is combatting the preconceived notions on powder reuse with a detailed report on two separate 8-month long studies conducted in parallel to serial production. On Monday, September 10 at 11:00 am in room W194-A, process and manufacturing engineer Andrew Carter will share the results of the studies in Metal Additive Manufacturing Myths: The Truth About Powder Reuse and its Effect on Mechanical Properties.

Results of Studies:

  • The first study focused on feedstock properties and the resulting room and elevated temperature tensile results of INCONEL® 625.
  • The second study focused on chemical composition and room temperature tensile properties of Cobalt Chrome, as well as the powder properties and room temperature properties of IN625.
This mission to control, track and develop the additive metals production process led to vertical integration of multiple post-process operations and inspection techniques, leading to:
  • Decreased response time to process drift and potential defect parts
  • An efficient and economic powder management process
  • Increased confidence in DMLS material/part quality
  • Insight into powder lifecycle
