- 3D printed parts typically have visible “stair stepping” on sloped and angled surfaces due to the layering nature of the process, which can easily be improved by sanding and coating. Printing at higher resolutions can reduce the appearance of stepping, but it incurs the added expense of extra build time. If extremely smooth surfaces are desired, finishing with sanding and coating may be a more efficient solution.
